The profitability math
Margin is not
markup.
Profit margin measures profit as a share of selling price. Markup measures profit relative to cost. Importers often need both because freight, duty and selling fees can materially change unit economics.
This is a planning tool. Include returns, taxes, advertising, payment fees and other costs when they apply to your business.
Common margin questions
Before you
place the order.
What costs should I include?
Include supplier cost plus every per-unit cost that affects your economics, such as freight, duty, customs, fulfillment, marketplace fees, payment fees and other known costs.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin divides profit by selling price. Markup divides profit by cost. The percentages are different even when the dollar profit is the same.
What if profit is negative?
A negative result means the entered selling price is below the total entered cost per unit. Review pricing, supplier cost or the other cost assumptions before committing to the order.
