What does MOQ
really change?
What is supplier MOQ?
MOQ, or minimum order quantity, is the smallest number of units a supplier is willing to sell in one order. It can be set by production economics, packaging, materials or the supplier's preferred batch size.
How MOQ affects importer cash flow
A high MOQ requires more cash before the inventory begins selling. Compare the MOQ order value with your available purchase budget to see whether the order creates a shortfall or leaves budget capacity.
MOQ vs actual inventory requirement
Your target purchase quantity is based on expected sales, current inventory and desired coverage. It may be lower than the supplier MOQ, which means some cash is tied up in units you do not currently need.
How to calculate months of inventory
After an MOQ order, divide total inventory by expected monthly sales. When monthly sales are zero, coverage is unavailable rather than infinite because there is no sales rate to divide by.
Why a low unit price can still create inventory risk
A cheaper unit price does not remove the cash requirement of buying more units than your demand supports. Review order value, coverage, storage and excess cash together.
How to prepare for MOQ negotiations
Bring a demand estimate, current inventory position and target purchase quantity. You can ask whether a smaller first order, mixed cartons or a phased production run is possible without assuming the supplier will agree.
Why sales forecasts are estimates
Expected sales can change with seasonality, pricing, competition and channel performance. Treat the coverage and negotiation target as decision support, then revisit them when your forecast changes.
Common MOQ questions
Before you
place the order.
Does a lower MOQ always mean a better supplier?
No. MOQ is one part of a sourcing decision. Compare the full quote, landed cost, quality, lead time and commercial terms before choosing a supplier.
What if my current inventory already exceeds the target?
Your target purchase quantity becomes zero. That indicates the current inventory already covers the target quantity under the entered sales estimate.
Can this predict my exact storage bill?
No. The storage figure is a conservative estimate based on full post-order inventory and the entered storage rate. Actual storage changes as inventory sells down and as warehouse terms change.
